Day 5
The best day of
the trip was arguably day 5. Just after
sunrise, we drove to the Jordan River Baptismal site at Yardenit. Those who desired were able to change into
robes and get Baptized in the Jordan River.
I was baptized at the FORT church in Houston in 2005, but I still wanted
the experience of being Baptized in the same river that Jesus was baptized, so
I considered this a reenactment of my one Baptism. Pastor Ronnie from Dallas Texas baptized
Leyda, me, and several other tour group companions. The feeling was terrific. We left the Jordan River and headed to the
docks of the Galilean Sea where we boarded a boat and navigated towards the
center of the sea. Surprisingly a small
storm came through while we were on the sea.
Of course, it made the Galilean Sea gospel stories even more real. While on the sea, the tour group was led in
worship music by Daniel Carmel, a well known Israeli Christian artist. Together the group sang songs such as ‘How
Great is Our God’ and ‘I’m Desperate for You.’ The atmosphere was heavenly and
the sentiment was great. We then headed
to the city of Bet she'an also called Scythopolis which is one of the Roman
Decapolis cities. The Romans were superb
architects and built extraordinary roads and buildings in this city. Fascinating ruins of these structure still
remain intact today. We then headed
south and visited another spot on the Jordan River near Jericho, a place that
is believed to be where Jesus was Baptized. (Matthew
3:13) It was surprising to see
how small the Jordan River is in width at this section. Approximately only 15ft wide. Just 15ft feet away on the other side of the
Jordan River is the nation of Jordan.
Armed soldiers on both sides of the river stand guard on the river
through the day. From here we headed to
Qumran caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found in 1946. We didn’t go into any caves we only viewed
them from a distance and listened to a lecture on the Essenes Jews, the
religious group responsible for leaving the Dead Sea scrolls in the caves
nearly 2000 years ago. Our last stop was
our lodging spot at the Leonardo Hotel on the Dead Sea. We changed clothes and got ready for a dip in
the salty sea. Floating on the Dead Sea
was amazing. It’s incredible to hop into
the water and not be able to sink. [Interesting fact: #1) The Dead Sea is ten times saltier than
the ocean. #2) There is no life in and
around the Dead Sea.]

romanos eran excelentes arquitectos y construyeron caminos extraordinarios y
edificios en esta ciudad. Ruinas fascinantes de estas estructuras todavía
permanecen intactas hoy.
Matthew 3:1-2,5-6
In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” --- Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
John 6:16-20
Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid. But He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”
